How it works
Our game is simple and fun to play!
Each week, you’ll get a few new questions. The answers you find will fill in a specially designed crossword puzzle. That means you’ll already know how many letters each answer has — and every correct answer you discover will help you find the rest, since their letters overlap.
Let’s take the demo crossword from the home page as an example — you can try it out even without creating an account. This crossword has 5 questions. The answer to question 1 goes in the horizontal row that starts at cell number 1. The answers to the remaining questions go vertically in their respective columns.
For this demo, we’ve made things a bit easier – finding the answers wouldn’t be a challenge for the artificial intelligence. Most of the “questions” are actually pairs of key words — your task is to figure out what word connects them. For instance:
- Question 5 gives you the key words trivia and test — the answer is quiz.
- Question 4 gives you proof and immune — the answer is resistant.
- Question 2 gives you keys and threads — the answer is clues (from Old English clew, “yarn/ball of thread”).
The modern meaning of clue — as a “hint” — comes from the Greek myth of Theseus using a ball of thread to find his way through the Minotaur’s labyrinth.
Question 1 is a little trickier — it has four key words, which are actually the answers to questions 2, 3, 4, and 5.
At this point, we already have three of them: quiz, resistant, and clues.
So here is how far we’ve come solving the crossword:
Still stuck? Try question 3 — it’s an interesting one! The first two domain names mentioned are Tuvalu (.tv) and Micronesia (.fm), but we’re looking for an island named after an animal. Even if you don’t know it right away, a quick search will tell you it’s Anguilla (domain .ai), named by Christopher Columbus because of its eel-like shape — Anguilla means “eel” in Spanish and Italian.
Now you have everything you need to solve question 1. And now you also know why our game is called Clues for AI-Resistant Quiz — or simply CLAIREQUIZ!
